No doubt about it, 43. Using AD as an example, here's his salary for the next 5 years:
2020 $17M
2021 $19.892
2022 $9.250
2023 $14M
2024 $16.75M
I think this question reflects your suggestion: would AD reduce his salary in 2021 by $12M and increase his salary by $4M in 2022, 2023, and 2024 so the Rams can resign other players for the 2021 season?
And my answer would be: there's a better way.
Convert $16M of AD's 2021 to a signing bonus. That reduces his cap hit in 2021 by $12M (the desired effect) and increases his cap hit by $4M in each of the next 3 years (same impact as moving salary). The reason it's better is that it puts that $16M in AD's pocket today so he has incentive to do it.
Goff actually converted some of his 2020 salary to a bonus to create $7M in cap space this year. [
theramswire.usatoday.com] Can't imagine why he and AD wouldn't do that for 2021.
