Nobody said they were rich. But by any measure a person who makes over $2 million in 3 years is a millionaire unless that person blows it all. Are we now redefining "millionaire" for players because they don't have long careers?
As for the pay cut. If your employer simply can't pay because of something like this pandemic that takes a huge bite out of the company's revenues, so be it.
But for us to wring our hands over these players making their money is as bad as worrying over the owners going bankrupt or something. Neither is going to happen.
As much as we put these players on pedestals, they are no different than the rest of us. They just make a heck of a lot more money by playing a kid's game really really well.
I don't see people putting players on pedestals. That may happen when the discussion is about athletic ability or athletic achievements. But when it comes to league economics, one big general tendency is to see them as entitled and undeserving whiners. Meanwhile when the discussion is league economics, management gets a pass--it's always disobedient, entitled players with their silly demands pestering the quietly solid and mistake-free world of management Dads.
My view is that they are two different interest groups in a collaborative enterprise (there is no league and no games without the CBA) negotiating over some difficult issues. I don't see player bashing as the least bit realistic or insightful. I would say the same about kneejerk owner bashing but that tends not to be as common.
