There needs to be an ongoing policy for cancellations beyond this year

There needs to be an ongoing policy for cancellations beyond this year.

The way this world is now, there will be all kinds of events causing cancellations as in the modern age, people are just shutting things down more and more with any obstacle. Some are tragic like the virus and others for less tragic as load management.

1) For one, this current virus will go on indefinitely. Only until everybody realizes it is to accept some level of risk or herd immunity never gets reached and day after day, month after month, year after year, there will be dips and spikes with the virus. It will be like the stock market. The virus just doesn't go away by wearing masks and social distancing. It lingers around and until it can't spread because enough people are immune, it can pick back up at any time.

2) Now that the world sees the powerful United States folding and crumbling with the virus, there will be another manufactured virus by either another country or terrorist. This isn't a once in a century event at this point. Had it been played like people be safe, older people stay isolated and younger people make good decisions, but we continue on as a society versus shutting down, this wouldn't get so much fanfare, but you can guarantee many parts of the world has taken note how this virus took down the country.

3) There seems to be other terrorist threats unrelated to the virus that hit the world every year and it is a constant threat. These will cause cancellations in the future at some point. It may not be this year, but it will happen again.

4) The weather and Natural Disasters of the world like earthquakes and hurricanes seem to be increasing and you can count on more hits from those events.

5) Within the country there is a new acceptance of Riots and Criminal Activity, where the destruction and fear of such activity will lead to events where games will be cancelled.

So all of this will cause future cancellations, unless the country gets back to the we don't back down from anything mentality that existed previously for more than 2 centuries.

Given all of that, the professional sports, should not treat this as a one time event, but develop a new approach on their agreements for partial seasons on everything including the salary structure. I think it should be as simple as a per game salary and if the team plays 5 games, everybody gets 5/16 of the salary and so forth. That would include both the games just being cancelled or a player choosing not to play. I actually this should be implemented in the NBA for the players that want to play the load management game. If they play only 60 games and 10 were for injury and 12 misses were for load management, they only get paid for the 60+10 = 70 games. They do not get paid for load management. Maybe you implement a vacation policy or allow for a few games where they have a family event like a death or birth in the family as well to cover getting paid for that, but the time to reevaluate all of the pay structures for players should be agreed on now ahead of time instead of dealing with it after the fact.
