I agree with what your doctor friend said. I don't agree with your last sentence since you have to have a provable vaccine for "herd immunity" to work. Do you mean "natural immunity" as in Measles ? Here is a quote from the article I posted"
"Herd immunity is community or group protection that happens when a critical number of the population is immune to a certain disease. It can help stop or slow the spread of an infectious disease like measles or swine flu.
The safest way to get immunity is through vaccination. You can also get natural immunity by contracting the illness and building an immune response to it.
Herd immunity isn’t the answer to stopping the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Once a vaccine is developed for this virus, establishing herd immunity is one way to help protect people in the community who are vulnerable or have low functioning immune systems."
We're on the same page aren't we.
Some facts that apparently the proponents of "herd immunity" don't know. I know you know them but I am just putting it down in black n white to drive the points home:
* to realistically achieve "herd immunity" a vaccine is necessary--as your quoted material directly states.
* we cannot count on natural immunity to achieve herd immunity because we do not actually know yet how long we are immune if we get it and get over it. Could be years like with some viruses--and it could be just months as with other viruses. WE DO NOT KNOW.
So yeah the people who believe natural immunity will lead to herd immunity are just assuming something when scientists do not actually know yet if it's true or not.
Given all that it's vaccines that are needed.
Think back to the Spanish Flu. It took 3 years to go away and is infamous for its especially deadly 2nd wave. And yes there were people who got it twice.
