I can't see why Akers should beat out Hendu on any level. Hendu is faster and breaks more tackles. Akers might block better, but that's it. It is possible that Brown actually is the main starter as he is a power back. Nice to have all 3. Glad to have Akers.
Ask yourself this question. If McVay were truly pleased with Henderson, why would the Rams take a RB with their first pick?
Only two answers make a lot of sense to me.
1. McVay doesn’t think Hendy is the answer or at least has doubts.
2. Or Snead/McVay think Akers is such a perfect fit that they just couldn’t pass him up.
I lean toward #2 but it’s probably a bit of both.
They intend to platoon backs in a rotation and they need another high caliber back for that.
Plus even if they don't intend to rotate them, there's this. If your run game is that important you need two backs in case one misses time.
On the other hand I am not dismissing the idea that McV has questions about Henderson. As you know there were reports last year that Henderson had playbook issues.
My own preference is that (1) Akers is what he appears to be, (2) Henderson steps it up, (3) they run a rotation with anywhere from a 50/50 to a 60/40 split.
But they stopped answering my calls so I don't know if they played the voicemails back and so I don;t know if they know they should run a rotation.
