Speed, production numbers are a good indicator, but if you dig into the specifics they are not always what they are cracked up to be. Cupp was very productive, he also played on a pass happy Eastern Washington team against for the most part weaker opponents . As i recall he did shine against some of the stronger opponents that Eastern Washington faced. Ackers production in College although very good, was certainly below other RB’s that were drafted lower. That has spurned much debate on this site so i won’t go into it. Needless to say measuring production is not a totally objective thing. I have not looked deeply into why Van’s production wasn’t more. It is concerning. But what I like about him is that he is a good route runner, can get separation and apparently was clocked as the fastest player at the Senior Bowl. Unlike Mims who I predict will need much development and as a result will not contribute much this season, Van appears to have the attributes necessary to step right in. He has had very good pro style coaching, is mature and has a very good football acumen.
On a side note, I believe like you that the offensive line cost the Rams the playoffs. I would advocate for spending more resources on it because I believe the half second extra a QB can have to throw allows most receivers to get open especially on mid range and deeper routes. I hope the gamble is right and the Oline stays healthy and improves. But if it can’t, what can work is a quick passing game with a multitude of options. From everything I have seen and read Van will be a great option for both a quick passing attack because he can get separation and is good off the line and will be precise on both short and deeper routes. He offers so much flexibility; hope he produces in a more prolific passing attack. It also appears he has mastered the full route tree unlike so many talented players who are limited because they didn’t.
