but I’m not as high on him as I was
To me he has a ton of upside ... good speed, very good size and athletic ability. In terms of physical overall talent better than Cooks, Woods, or Kupp he just doesn’t play as hard as any of them
I’m not sure why but i’ll give it a stab
1) He doesn’t have that other gear mentally that you’d like to see in a player. Not yet anyhow. Let me put it to you this way and I know you know this. Look at how hard Rob Woods plays or Kupp or for that matter Cooks. Those players are going 100 mph per hour. Reynolds does not seem to have that gear the others have. I don’t know that there are two players that compete harder than Aaron Donald and Woods. They play so hard. It stands out
2) McVay’s use of him. Rarely was he used to stretch the field. You mentioned the Bears game I cant recall another game where he made a similar play. Even in those highlights he was used as a short to intermediate WR mostly. A week a so ago I posted his college tape to try and make the point how differently the Rams use him from how he was used in college.
Maybe he comes on this year if he is the full time starter in that 3 WR set and without playing behind either Cooks or Kupp but I kinda think he is what he is. A good player with great athletic ability that simply doesn’t translate into great player. The thing is This offense shouldn’t need 3 great options at WR to be productive what other team has that? The fact the Rams had a Cooks, Woods and Kupp was an exception not a rule in the NFL. It’s unusually to have 3 that good. So having Kupp, Woods, and now Reynolds just levels the playing field.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rams don’t draft a WR high but change their offensive philosophy a bit and we see Reynolds used to try and stretch the field more often. Not as much as Cooks because he’s not fast like that but definitely more vertical routes and less short and intermediate Kupp routes which don’t seem to fit him as well
