I agree. There are so many unknowns right now that could lead to (a) status quo performance-wise, (b) marginal improvement or (c) significant improvement. Just the ones that come to mind...
- Overall OL health- their week one starters missed 25 games last year vs. zero in 2018 and 2017 (which was such an outlier- hence the need for better depth entering 2020)
- Can Whitworth give one more good season?
- Does Havenstein stay (in which case I would presume they feel his decline was injury-based and he reclaims the RT spot) or is he traded during the Draft?
- To what degree do Evans and Edwards improve?
- What do the Rams coaches think about Corbett? Is he a starter, utility backup, etc.? Do they find a quality LG in the Draft? Does Havenstein possibly returning to form then push Evans to RG and Edwards back over to LG?
- Does Allen make the team? Right now I see him as their 8th OL. Drafting an OL could make him the 9th guy on the depth chart- or possibly off the roster come late August.
I do think they will add an OL somewhere in the top 90 picks of the Draft. Ideally they find a LG that could push Corbett to be the 6th man (G/C) with Noteboom the 3rd OT. But again Havenstein is such an x-factor.
Nice list, 93.
We’re just spitballin’ here as we await the draft but I do have a couple of comments.
About drafting a C early. On the one hand I’m not sure if or when such a rookie could beat out Blythe this year. OTOH, Blythe is on a one year prove it deal so it would be nice to have a stud second year C ready to start for the next 10 years beginning in ‘21. IOW, such a pick would be fine with me.
About drafting an OG early. From what I’ve gleaned from reading about this crop it seems doubtful that a rookie likely to be available in the 3rd round or later will be able to beat out the ascending Corbett. Don’t we already have ample backup OG candidates?
So, I see better value/need at RB, Edge, and ILB. We could maybe get immediate starters or quality contributors in this ‘20 season for those positions. Heck, a WR or S gem might fall into our lap by midrounds.
Can’t wait to see how Snead might trade down and which players he targets.
