I thought STs were bad this year, not just a few spots.
Football Outsiders had them at the bottom.
They were middle of the pack last year, and top of heap in 2017.
That’s what I saw, constant decline.
Yeah we all know they were worse this year. That's not the issue I was addressing.
For that matter all 3 units were worse this year.
Be that as it may, what I said was true---Fassel;s ST return units always had penalties. THAT is NOT new. I had a signature line in the chat room I use. For the first holding or illegal block in the back penalty on a Rams return unit in a game, I would always say, "see that's how you know it's a Rams game." I had been saying that for years.
Penalties on return units had nothing to do with how good or bad his ST units were--they used to get them anyway and then (until this year) were good anyway.
That was my one, minor, btw point.
Oh that and I hope he didn't get let go because of the bad fake punt. That would be a kneejerk over-reaction.
My bet is the performance of that unit overall this year had nothing to do with letting him walk. Because if there is one coach you COULD COUNT ON to fix a special teams unit after a down year, it would be Fassel.
Naw if we're looking for reasons for this, saying that after years of doing well he was let go after one bad year, well that would be a BAD reason. So I am hoping that's not the reason.
