I think given their cap and free agency situation the best they can do is add one experienced OL in the offseason. Ideally it's a quality veteran castoff like a Weddle or Matthews type situation. Right now to me center would be the ideal spot to significantly upgrade while continuing to develop Allen as their top interior backup. Maybe a Ben Jones from TEN or Whitehair from CHI. But my point is I think they do have some young talent and adding one quality veteran can help the guys next to him.
I agree. One vet looks like the max that can be afforded. I was also thinking a center would be good but the top tier guys in J.C. Tretter, Whitehair, and Ben Jones all just signed extensions in the $11M range within the last 6 weeks.
Maybe there will be some 2nd tier guys available. I don't know.
If they are going to sign an OC, the hope is another Sullivan--much older vet who comes in for less, Matthews/Weddle style, and he is in front of a younger developing player.
Rams simply cannot afford a frontline, top tier OL FA.
Plus of course while the OL is struggling now--at least in part because both tackles regressed--it is wrongheaded to assume they have no talent. I think at least NB, Edwards, and Evans will be a good part of the future, and possibly Allen too depending on his recovery.
That will be the core of their OL going forward.
This spend a lot on newbies thing is just based on underestimating the talent they do have.
Talent is just one of the considerations. The spend money concept is not completely based on deeming there to be a lack of talent. That's an assumption on your part.
I feel they do have some talent. Unfortunately, two of the four young players that they have been developing just suffered major injuries. Couple that with Hav's injury and that will greatly affect the current plan of going with youth IMO.
In addition, I feel the clear subpar performance this year will make them reconsider the plan to completely rely on young players. IMO, they will try to balance the young talent with a few stable vets.
I personally believe that bringing Whit back for another year and/or bringing in another vet for the interior will be options on the table. But I don't for one second believe they will return in 2020 with only the young talent they have now plus a draft pick or two.
