They have no choice.Well they did have a choice, several. But none that are appealing.
1. After the Wentz extension, they could offer up a contract similar. Thats the path they took.
2. Low ball him, risk insulting and alienating him, with little to no chance he accepts the deal. This isn't even a real option.
3. Let him play out his deal, then tag him at a ridiculous number and cripple your cap as well as risk a holdout.
4. Let him play out his deal, try and resign him with no tag in place and risk losing him to FA. This will play into the next few options:
5. Lose Goff to FA and hope picking in the late 20s to 32 will net you a Qb that McVay will have to coach up in a hurry.
6. Go the FA route. Like Bortles...yikes.
Its a good year to draft a QB (in theory, I still have questions on each QB so far) but I really doubt McVay wants t ostart all over with a rookie QB. FA is just too meh, and frankly tagging a QB is a bad idea.
Option 1 was truly the only option the Rams had to keep their playoff window open (and esp considering opening a new stadium next year being an important year).
Now do I believe the only reason they gave Goff so much money was because they had no choice? Not really. They believe they can win with Goff. And why shouldn't they, he led them to the SB last year. His contract is in line with similar Qbs in their 2nd contract, so its not like he is getting some much above and beyond. Wentz was first, Goff got his and Dak will to.
Again, I am just playing devils advocate. Because I like Goff. I like his arm talent and how quickly he has grown out of an air raid offense. The Rams can win with him. Right now (and I cannot understand why no one is reading this part.) RIGHT NOW, I wound not trust him in a big spot in a big game.
