I love McVay, but this is an example, in my opinion, of overthinking the situation. At 2nd and 2 from the 3-yard line, it's your first series, please impose your will and run the ball. Run it twice, if necessary. If you don't punch it in, you're at least looking at 1st and Goal from the 1-yard line.If you can't make the two yards to get the 1st and Goal, you kick the FG and politely tell your O-line to get it in gear!
As was the case, they attempted a pass, Allen was down field too soon and now it's 2nd and 7 from the 8-yard line. Now it's a completely different series and we settle for the FG anyway. I just think the percentages are in your favor if you just play power football in that situation.And if you show that tendency over the course of a season, play action will be much more effective in those short areas.
