I have always felt that a LOS near the goal line is a precious commodity to be respected by the play caller. This is an issue I have seen play out at every level. And it is one problem I have with McV.
Let's say you have 1 and goal at the 4. OK, whatever you do, do nothing likely to lose yardage. Running play? Hit the line hard and fast. Limit the downside to no gain. Pass? Run quick-hitting routes which will reduce the chance of a sack or holding penalty. Attack the goal line as fast and aggressively as possible.
What I hate are slow developing, complex running plays. The DL is massed to attack in numbers. The chances of gaining an advantage through misdirection is low and the chances of a loss are high. Similarly with pass plays. I especially hate screens on the goal line. They invite multiple defenders and start well behind the LOS.
McV gets awfully cute on the LOS. TE screen? Really?
What drives me nuts is that we have personnel who should be killers on the goal line. Everett. Reynolds. Higs. Kupp. Woods. These guys should terrify defenses with quick slants. We did hit the quick slant, albeit to a diminutive WR not physically suited to that call. Credit to Goff and Cooks for pulling it off. But why are we not threatening physical patterns with our big guys?
I dunno. McV always and perfunctorily says "My bad." But in this area, little changes. It is a problem.
