exactly what you're saying... about McVay's attitude toward PS games or PS games in general.
My thoughts - McVay's main consideration is having a healthy starting unit for game one. Which depends on:
Preparation. I'm not as convinced as you, and I think most others agree with YOU, that PS games 'prepare' a player that much better than weekly practices, if at all. I would never say it "never does'', at times... but I think coaches can nearly always make that determination sans a PS game - - and considering that every second a player is on that practice field they are fighting to make the "53", (whether you and I can see them or not), I think the 'unknowns', for the coaches, are few. NOT non existent, but weighed agains the threat of injury I believe, (just my opinion), well worth the what I consider 'small risk' of having misjudged in practice OR not fully preparing a player for a game.
As for coaches 'speak'... no doubt about it, and that McVay would, IMHO, never entirely reveal his approach to coaching to include strategy for PS games.
In the end - I have no idea if McVay's thinking on PS games comes near mine... I doubt it... but the result is close and I'm ok with that. - JamesJM
