They come in as inexperienced, but they're also not rookies. They have played through two full training camps, 2019 OTAs, were active for 19 games a year ago, played special teams and got some (limited) work on offense in a couple games last year, and- to me most importantly- each played as a starter once a week throughout last season (in place of Sullivan and Whitworth). Not insignificant. They come into 2019 as prepared as Blythe was coming into 2018.
I also agree that they must have shown enough behind the scenes (in the classroom, on the practice field) and in joint practices otherwise they would have played some this preseason.
Bonsignore has written about Allen and also talked about him at some length in the new podcast he has with Rich Hammond. Allen does not lack confidence or voice. Both good signs.
To me, Noteboom is under more pressure because he is taking over for one of the best LG in the league the past two years. Allen, by contrast, takes over for Sullivan who, while a valuable vet, noticeably declined late in each of the past two seasons. I'm very glad we had Sullivan the past two years but timing was good to move on.
Neither needs to be exceptional in 2019. They need to not be liabilities. And they need to improve as the season progresses. They will certainly be works in progress throughout 2019 (and beyond). McVay will likely game plan to their strengths early on.
