Of course, 6 PS quarters wouldn't get him there either. But he would have a lot more chances to face and deal with NFL fronts than practices and scrimmages could give him.
I don't have any problem with your concerns. I don't share them but I know they're valid issues. My specific disagreement with you is in that statement, and your view of scrimmages.
The Rams players themselves say they got more out of the scrimmages with other teams than they would have gotten from PS games.
And they're very specific about what they mean by that. First off scrimmages are live action against competitive #1s they don't know (and they don't know how they will react). The offense going against the other team's defense does not know the defensive calls and looks they will get. So they are physically just not that different from a PS game.
BUT the advantages are #1 they get more reps. The starters got like 50-60 reps per scrimmage. And #2 they get to script situations and run several consecutive plays in those situations. For example, third and short, goal line, 2-minute drill, etc. Rams players say they might (for instance) never run a play in 2-minute offense in a PS game but they can run several in scrimmages.
The thing is, the Rams players themselves say they got more out of those kinds of scrimmages than they ever got out of pre-season games.
So whatever advantage you see PS games giving them, the players think they DID get out of the scrimmages, only more so.
