12th? That sounds okay. There can be quibbles about this or that spot in the rankings. But a 3rd year qb with an upward trajectory destined to be a tier one? Sounds right to me.
There are things he needs to do better more consistently, but that's just true of 3rd year qbs for the most part. There are plenty of good NFL qbs who were not as good as Goff was in his 3rd year.
Another example: Roethlisberger. Using a cut-off where a below average game is one with a qb rating of less than 80, BR had 8 such games in his 3rd year. (Goff had 6 of 19). In those 8 games, BR threw 5 TDs and 21 INTs. In his other 8 games, he threw 13 TDs and 2 INTs.
So good qbs usually still stumble a bit in year 3, and Goff stumbled less than most good ones have.
In terms of what the assessors said in Sando's original article, I agree with all this:
Quote
“I like him a lot,” an offensive coordinator said. “He didn’t play as well as you’d like in the Super Bowl, so people are overreacting, but you watch his season, he makes some unbelievably good throws. He is the perfect guy for them. Definitely a 2.”
“... it is not just the system, because other guys have played in it.”
"...against the tougher teams, where he has to rely on his ability to read, he is not quite there."
Good, not quite there (in terms of being tier one)...but getting there.
