If a player is injured and not put on the injury report...and then last minute doesn't play, the team would get fined mightily for it.

You could argue that the flare up occurred last minute. Well, I can make that same argument for an injury.
I just don't see any difference.
I would say that MJD would be going out on a HUGE limb by saying Todd Gurely said...when Todd Gurley didn't say...or you would expect a correction if he misinterpreted.
I just want him to get healthy!
He was put on report in December. In fact he sat for 2 games.
In September, whatever happened subsided because he was able to play in game 2. He was not good in game 2 but it got better after that until it flared up again in December.
And I agree with you that teams report these things. And since they DID report pain and inflammation in December, and NEVER reported an actual injury (rip tear bruise break etc). then...that's likely what happened.
YET MJD said he GOT INJURED in game one, in the rip break sprain etc, physical trauma sense. And that he played anyway and it was never reported.
You did not directly say this but from that I easily conclude that MJD's version is incorrect. You back me my talking about the fact that yes teams report these things.
