Both men seem pretty capable of talent evaluation. But that’s just a “checkers” thing.
To play GM “chess”, one must do so much more.
Hire the best possible HC.
Establish rapport with said HC and then get him best possible players of the type he prefers.
Hire a scouting staff that can find said players.
Be able to establish relationships with other GM’s that can facilitate trades.
Be able to predict where and when targeted players will fall.
Be able to consistently master the FA process, both outgoing and incoming.
Master the ability to help one’s team via trades, both up and down.
Deal with player agents in an honorable and trusted way.
Keep the owner informed and happy.
And on and on and on...
Many GM’s may have a handle on most player evals. But the rest of it? Maybe just a handful of GM’s can do it all.
I wish DJ and Mayock all the best. But it’s not gonna be easy to join that elite group of GM’s.
Rams got real lucky with Snead and McVay. They seem to have caught lightning in a bottle twice. Lol.
