tho very surprised the Rams didn't feel DL was not as big a deal as I did. They must really like last year's DL rooks more than I thought.
They used mid round picks both years - 4th rounders for DE JFM & NT GGaines - to bolster the rotation...Gaines & SebasDay will fight it out at NT.
Brockers will be LDE w/JFMs coming in relief with Young in for AD??? Plenty of unproven EDGE fellas that we can watch in PS which will be super fun cuz the starters won't see a down!!! But I'm really stoked to see more rooks playin anyway!!
Reading around on Gaines, I see why people think he's special. I mean special as a nose tackle--not a multi-dimensional DL type. He's aggressive, smart, strong as an ox, and a natural NT. Analyst after analyst compares him to Kyle Williams, the great Bills NT who just retired.
One analyst even said this---Gaines is the reason why you don't take a Lawrence in round 1. Gaines is nearly as good as Lawrence at the same role but you get him in the 4th (Kyle Williams was a 5th round pick).
This means they have Brockers at DE and Gaines at NT, sooner rather than later. He's their starter I think. Snead and McVay virtually said as much.
They didn't take DL high because as they anticipated, all the 1st round DL candidates were gone when they picked. But after that Gaines was their guy, which is why they traded up for him.
Gaines won't be better than the post-season Suh, but odds are good he will be better than the regular season Suh was.
So IMO they did address DL.
...
Yeah, Gaines might prove to be one of the best picks in what is looking like a helluva Ram draft.
One more thing about Gaines that I absolutely love is his attitude. A little bit of an AD attitude, if you will. The game prep, the effort, the will to dominate is very AD-like. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see those two become monsters on that DL and very close teammates off the field, too.
