More than he's being given credit for certainly. And for a nose of course, he's obviously no 3T where the best interior rush types end up.
But you can see on the tape that he can penetrate into the backfield when he's not doubled up, so either way I do think he's going to surprise and end up on the field more than even the Rams think. He'll get plenty of third down and passing down snaps IMO.
I quite agree, Merlin. Gaines is likely gonna pleasantly surprise a lot of Ram fans this year with both his rush and run D.
Another thing that I think will be a factor, and a huge one, is that there should be a synergy effect when combining Gaines with AD. A synergy not unlike that projected if Lawrence had been our early draft pick. And a synergy that most of us had expected but never really got with the Suh pairing last year.
I do predict that AD will focus a bit less on sacks and a bit more on run D this year as he did late last year and in the playoffs. But can you imagine what AD could do if Gaines and Brockers are also demanding attention from opposing O’s? I think Gaines can be a turbocharger-like factor on this new DL. We’ll see.
