but if you leave penalties to be decided on interpretation....or as you say let them play....it simply goes opposite of looking like integrity and into wonders about the officials....IMO it's so simple....stop adding points to a rule to where it just can't be decided on the field.
Protection is needed for players for sure, but does that mean that refs can keep a QB safe by calling a ruffing call when it is no where near the danger of a player? ( the call against the chiefs was just so absurd, but it cost the chiefs the ball and gave the pats a 1st down)....No this stuff is just too polluted with rules that are meant to be judged and determined that it is impossible to have a game played without questions about the officiating...and IMO that's is what they are wanting to do....
Yes I agree call all games the same whether it be regular season, playoffs or SB....But really the rules are so interpretive that the actual rule is lost.....Even if you let them play like you say all the time the rules are so convoluted to allow the ref to deem it the way he sees it that we would still have issues with officiating.
First of all, let me clarify. I never said I agreed with "let them play". What I said was that playoff officiating is different from regular season officiating and that I think that could be contributing to the issue. That's not the sole reason, but it may be a contributing factor. I hear what you're saying, though. Even if there was a way to unpollute the rules, how long do you think it'd be before they got polluted again? Because owners or lawyers would insist on adding points to the rules for the same reasons we have them today. Isn't one of the purposes of instant replay so that officials get certain calls right?. Well, even so... there is STILL sometimes controversy when the decisions the officials make after reviewing the play differ from the conclusions "we" makes (anybody not on the field) after seeing the same film. We are shocked sometimes when a call stands or is overturned.
I just don't see any simple or easy answers to this.
