One of the "behind the scenes" discussion on the Rams asked the question on why Joyner seems absent this year. Demarco Farr said it's because he is doing exactly what the team and scheme is telling him to do. The scheme calls for Johnson to be the more attacking safety and Joyner is supposed to be the safety valve. He went on to say the real reason why Joyner doesn't get in on more pass defenses is because other teams are staying away from him. He really was emphatic and made it seem like teams want no part of Joyner.
Now....I'm not sure how to accept this explanation. Because Peters has given up more than his share of big plays...and Joyner was nowhere near reacting fast enough (although he was there to make the tackle on a few and prevent a TD).
I think Joyner much prefers to play an attacking type of style. I don't think he likes sitting back and playing a soft zone. Maybe when Talib gets back (and now that the Rams have Fowler putting pressure on the edge).......Joyner can be more aggressive.
But....because Peters is gambling on every play...and with soft pressure from the edge....Joyner needs to play it safe.
