Ok. Now I’m totally confused.
I don’t want to talk about this anymore.
It's simple.
Saying that this OL, this coach, this system could elevate a lot of ROTs does not drop Hav to the bottom half of the league.
I didn't mean that, I didn't say that, I didn't think of it that way.
My view going back to last year is that Hav is solid and is a just below top 10 player at his position. I assume if they swapped him for someone else, no matter where he went, he would continue to be that.
But that this system and coach etc. would make that many other ROTs look better than they do where they are now.
Do a similar thing with qb. How many qbs in the league would look good playing for McVay in this offense? Just a handful? More than that? I think it's more than that.
Which takes nothing away from Goff, who obviously has special skills that have nothing to do with the system itself and were already evident at Cal.
....
“I would not call him very talented though. To me you could sub in about a dozen to a dozen and a half other ROTs from around the league and they would do as well or better”.I think this quote is where some of us thought you were claiming that Hav was a “bottom half” RT, zn.
To be fair, I agree that most any RT would play better under Kromer. But better than Hav? And for $8 million, or less? Not so sure about that.
Anyway, Hav is extended, affordable, and playing quite well. I think we can all agree upon those things, walk away happy, and claim a win.
I know the quote a couple of guys misread, 43. Thanks though.
Yes quite a few would be better than Hav. He's not a top talent. So a top talent on this line would be better.
In terms of the contract, by 2021 when the Goff contract kicks in, and it is apparent that you can only have at best 8-9 top contract guys, Hav will probably be gone. You don't put ROT on that short list...even if he actually were an exceptional talent (which he isn't). That's probably why the contract is set up so that after 2019 he can be cut without a dead money penalty. That's not true of any other extension the Rams wrote this year. None of the other contracts allows you to dump the player after just one contract year. That's probably because they intend to keep guys like Gurley, Cooks, and Donald longterm, and actually do see them as belonging on a short list of essential big contracts.
There's a reason why ROT gets less at the 2nd contract level than practically every other position outside of special teamers. For a lot of reasons they're not considered as vital or as hard to replace.
