I would not call him very talented though. To me you could sub in about a dozen to a dozen and a half other ROTs from around the league and they would do as well or better.
Like James and 43, I strongly disagree with your Hav assessment. Nobody is saying he is the top RT in the league, and yes there are better ones out there, with the number of better ones being subjective. But man, what do you want? The guy is getting the job done in a very effective manner.
Very puzzling...
I don't "want" anything. I'm not criticizing him. I am not even sure why you think I am.
Here's the part you don't quote.
Quote
I would say he is very workmanlike, and smart, and disciplined, and that his play is not pretty but when he's at his best he gets it done. All of which are qualities I praised when he was being criticized when he was playing hurt in 2016.
Go back to a guy like Nutten. Nutten didnt have the same level of talent as Saffold. And that's not a criticism. Nutten was a tough hombre though, and played good solid disciplined smart football. He was a good piece of the "sum is greater than its parts" 99 OL. Saying that is not criticism. It means a solid guy comes through for you. Same with Hav.
I honestly think people are just over-reacting to all this.
Maybe I should give up discussing it at all, because it just seems to lead to constant misunderstandings.
My friend, when I actually CRITICIZE a player, you'll know it.
Hav is solid and having a very good year on a very good OL. Nutten did the same in 99. So saying Nutten does not have Saffold's (or Timmerman's) level of physical talent is not a slam. Good OLs often include guys like that. Very solid players who mesh and come through for you. It's actually a very rare line that includes gifted pro bowlers at every spot, like the 80s lines that included Smith, Harrah, and Slater.
