"Go easy on holding calls. Only call the blatantly obvious ones. Ratings are up with the increased scoring."
A couple of games ago in the Game Time Forum, I said as much. We were discussing how in the world the refs could miss the blatant holds going on. I said that I believe the refs
are seeing the holds... but they're
choosing not to call them. I said that I believe there's something else at play... namely ratings are up, scoring is up, across the league and the flow of the game isn't disrupted. Exactly what the NFL wants. I didn't say it was right or that I agreed with it; but, I get it.
.. that refs ARE seeing them. Those refs have particular responsibilities. Unlike us, not all of them are following the ball or otherwise trying to take it all in. That back judge is looking at only a few things and is pretty danged TRAINED. All to say: there's absolutely no way they're missing those holds, much less consistently. The only real question, IMO, is why they call relatively few. I do know people who've boycotted the game because of head injuries and CTE, and many have threatened to because of players "taking a knee." I think it's more than plausible to suppose that the NFL is trying to protect the product. Offense sells.
