Did anyone ever say that Kupp or Cooks actually had a concussion? I guess what I want to know is were they in the concussion protocol because they had a concussion or was it just to see if they had a concussion.
Seems odd that they could both be concussed last Sunday and play a week later while Shields missed 2 years because of his.
(Is my ignorance on the subject showing?)
nfl-head-neck-spine-committees-concussion-protocol-overview/The link states the following:
"Each player and each concussion is unique, and there is no set time-frame for return to participation." It all depends on when their symptoms resolve.
Based on my own personal knowledge of concussions, they have differing levels of severity ranging from mild to very severe. It wouldn't be unusual for someone to return to normal activities in a few days if the concussion they experienced was mild.
The concussions Shields had may have been more severe.
In addition, if I understand correctly, Shield retired because of his history of concussions. I believe part of that was his own doing, not because he didn't pass the concussion protocol. Also, the nature of concussions is, once you start with a few, it becomes easier to have more and the effect of them begins to accumulate. I think that's partly why Shields stayed away for two years. He's had a lot.
