McVay, a TE guru, saw potential in Hemingway and said so publicly.
For whatever reason(s), it didn’t work out.
Hemingway got his snaps, so no one can fault McVay for that.
Hemingway didn’t deserve a roster spot, so he got cut by McVay.

And it was a mistake. He was wrong. The hubris of the young coach who has never been in this position before. As a result of that mistake, everyone actually dumps on the PLAYER. He's a whipping boy, far more than any other 6th round pick who couldn't come through.
And he's gone. The real lesson here is McVay's. Yeah you think you see potential but coaches can be wrong. So be much more balanced and reserved in what you say in public about players who haven't actually done anything yet.
My bet is McVay learned that lesson. I think it's in him to see that kind of situation for what it really was and to respond accordingly. Some of the guys dumping on Hemingway will deny the coach had a lesson to learn. But the coach, I trust, will actually learn it.

I mean, it’s not as if McVay was constantly raving about Hemingway. My memory was mostly that McVay was very disappointed with the injury in ‘17, stating that Hemingway was in their plans.
McVay hasn’t struck me as a HC that publicly goes overboard on his players. Take Goff, for example. McVay has been quite reserved in his praise for Goff, and for most other players, as well. McVay praises his performers when they do well, to be sure. All HC’s do. But I would hardly say that he goes overboard.
I’m happy to agree to disagree on this topic, if you like.
No here's what happens. I offer a slightly different opinion, one that puts in a minor criticism of a new young head coach.
And it attracts all sorts of heat.
All I did was put in a perfectly reasonable 2 cents. Just a different vote. But...for obvious reasons, that got taken as a challenge to debate. It's obvious why. Just think about it.
Done. I stand by every word I wrote in my last post. I trust McVay learned his lesson on this as a new young head coach and going forward he will be much more reserved in what he says about favorite players with potentional who actually have not come through yet. I think that THAT is what really happened here. And while this is of course speculation, I see it this way because I TRUST McVay. I trust he will see that issue for what it was and draw the right conclusions.
The way to prove me wrong if you need to for some reason is to wait till next year and see if he pumps up any more young unproven players the way he did TH and Reynolds this year. My bet is that (again) he will be much more measured about that.
