Either way the real point stands. McVay never said you dont play starters in the preseason. That's a made-up non-issue. What he said was that IN THE UNIQUE SITUATION OF PLAYING A TEAM IN THE PRE-SEASON THEY FACE IN WEEK 1, YOU DON'T PLAY STARTERS. Gruden made the exact same decision. Oakland didn't start starters either.
So the issue never was (#1) "do you play starters in the pre-season."
The issue always was, (#2) "what do you do if in the pre-season game 2 you play a team you face in week 1 of the regular season."
People keep acting like #1 is the issue, and it isnt'. #2 is the issue.
And to be perfectly honest, I am not entirely sure why that isn't completely obvious. Meaning, it's not issue #1, it's issue #2.
