And you need to hit on a lot of your draft picks to replenish when those tough choices happen.

If you;'re picking lower in the first round, rookies give you 2 things: (1) a 5 year option, and (2) the contracts for lower first rounders tend to be around 2.3 to 2.6 M, and contracts like that are part of the 40%, not just 60%.
I will say this. Most good teams consist of a key core of players and the rest have to be just good and of course so does the coaching. Take the core 8 players that make up the GSOT, and put them on any decent to okay team, and that team is a contender. I think that's a good way of seeing how this works.
The rest of the roster on GSOT teams? The usual mix of UDFAs (Fletcher), low draft picks (Miller), budget veterans (McCollum), and
re-animated cast-offs (Nutten). We remember the great talent of the GSOT teams, but they also had more UDFAs starting than any other superbowl team I can think of (Jenkins, Jones, Fletcher, Farr, Nutten, Warner, and Horne...who did a lot as a KR that year). (Some of those guys were originally UDFAs but came to the Rams as FAs, like Nutten and in his own different way Warner.)
If you think team personnel people are good at finding all that you can have faith in them maintaining a team around the core. As it happens I do feel that way about this staff.
