I'll be shocked if Donald sits out for more than a game or two. I don't think he will sit out at all. The only question is whether he will play on the tag or sign an extension..
The tag doesn't apply to this year though. The tag, and possible situation where he would demand a trade, is 2019 . He is playing under his 5th year option in 2018. In fact it's possible that even if they sign an extension, it starts in 2019, not 2018, the same way Cooks's deal works.
In terms of the info you have on Thompson's report, it's no more reliable than any other I suppose. Also---as much as people want to focus on AD's end being too high, there's less talk about the Rams end being too low. That's said without really knowing the numbers.
Demoff says they're far apart in how they value him and one possible reason for that (among many possible reasons for that) is that KD doesn't know HOW to value an elite DT/top defender in the league, and comes in too low.
And of course there's a very good chance that they are both just at 2 extremes right now but can and will compromise.
...
to clarify, what I meant by playing on the tag is play this year under existing contract and force tag next year. And I don't think he will do that and risk leaving all that money on the table if he gets hurt.
If the Rams are offering 21-22M with 75M guaranteed its a dumb move to risk losing that by playing this year.
I would bet he is insured for the actual amount. Being insured, he's never at risk for losing the actual money.
I think he cares about the contract and what it means more than possessing money per se.
And yes the Rams, IF they are going to come in low, would like to count on him calculating the risk of losing that offer. But the counter-calculation is, I would rather have the real contract that offers real value instead of being coerced into accepting a lower one, plus I resent what that attempted coercion means in terms of how much they value me.
Contracts to guys this competitive and proud do not just mean money.
....
Again, zn, you are projecting your own feelings on these matters as if AD felt the same way.
Fascinating...
We are gonna find out pretty soon, aren't we?
Everyone is doing that in every single post on this.
One feeling that gets projected is that the team front office is this infallible instrument of reason and players are just greedy.
There is not a single thing said by any participant in this discussion who is not seeing things the way they tend to see things. There is no exception.
One thing I notice is that for many, it is impossible to come up with a description of the player's motives or interests that isn't crude and reductive. A lot of it is wish-fulfillment...like the idea that a player like AD who is capable of getting massive insurance can be crudely coerced over threats of losing money.
My bet is you didn't even think of that.
Which means your own projected feelings are influencing you as much as anyone else.
....
You lose your bet.
So what if he insured himself. How much do you think it will cost him to insure himself against injury for $75M playing DT in the NFL for at least 16 games? Let me know when you've got that number.
Some of us already had this discussion last year and looked up the amounts. The discussion came up with different figures from looking it up, and at the time I thought insurance was prohibitive until it got talked about. My figure was 50,000 for every 10 M in question, and LARam's figure was 8-10,000 for every M. IF the proposed contract is a (very low) 75 M, the insurance on that, depending on whose figures you go with, ranges from 375,000 to 750,000. He would be making nearly 7 M this year so that's affordable.
There's 3-4 of us in that discussion, which begins here:
