Perhaps it is you that is missing the actual argument, zn?

No one is denying AD’s talent. We all agree that he’s a fabulous DL player.

I think we all also agree that he doesn’t impact a game result like a starting QB does, and thus shouldn’t be compensated in that range. Note that I said “starting QB”, not an elite QB, btw.

The discussions are currently about just how much is he worth overall to the Rams in financial terms. And at what point, if any, do the Rams say “No”?

Everything else is pretty much details.

Ironically, most posters are coalescing in the $21-24 million range. Not all that far apart, really. ‘Course, none of us are Demoff, Snead, or McVay. Lol.

I hear the bolded said all the time. I strongly agree that the QB position in general is the most impactful of any other position. I'd say it's true among any other major sport.

However, that's the general rule. I don't agree that an exceptional defensive player, the league's premier pass rusher, doesn't impact the game more than a great deal of starting QBs.

Ryan Tannehill.. He's the starting QB for the Dolphins. I don't think he provides more positive impact than Donald.

As the OP pointed out, when Watt (2014) and Miller (2016) signed their deals, they were the 11th and 16th respectively highest salaries in the league with only QBs ahead of them.

IMO, those salaries were a pretty accurate assessment of how much impact the top defensive player in the league provides relative to the QB position.

If the salary ends up being in the $21-24M range, that would mean that Donald too ends up being in range of 10th highest salaried player in the league. Money is typically the best measure of things. That contract IMO would reflect that the Rams (and by extension the league, the market, etc.) would view Donald as being in the 10th range of most impactful player in the league.

Franky, to be honest, I am pretty much worn out on the "qb comparison" argument.

Every year at 2nd contract time, starting QBs make more than others that same year and always will. Right now on 2nd contracts qbs are at 28 M. If AD signs at 23-24 M then the next qb contract at 30+ M will dwarf that.

You don't devalue a generational talent like AD by mentioning qbs every other sentence, as if someone were arguing against you.

I actually debated people in 99 who downgraded Faulk's talent because he was holding out of camp until the new contract was done. I don't know what it is about contract time that brings this out.

You need a qb. You also need other top elite players to build around. Some of those are on defense. You keep the best, in terms of talent and love of the game and character and dedication. You don't keep going "well he ain't Marino is he" (whose teams never won a superbowl partly because most of them were deficient on defense).

I mean, you know, tell the golden age Walsh 49ers that "Ronnie Lott is not a quarterback." smoking smiley
