Well he played last year and that was for less money than he's getting this year.
So yes he risked his one-time big cash-in contract and played anyway.
I just assume he will again this year.
There's also the issue of missing an accrued season if he's not in by Aug 7. So I guess it's a calculated risk.
He's probably insured too but then that costs.
