Kevin has his work cut out for him right now. He hasn't failed just yet.
Donald needs to be figured out, in terms of how the team will proceed if he prices himself out of LA. Will they play hardball with him and actually not waive his $80K fees for missing camp? And then proceed to simply tag him 2x years in a row? Or put him on the trade market and see what it looks like first. Lot of different ways they can play this and Kevin's going to be at the center of where the Rams draw that line on contract negotiations.
Then you have Cooks, who we just surrendered a first round pick for. If they don't sign him it will be a travesty, having given up two consecutive high picks for a position where we couldn't retain the player. So IMO he is a signing that Kevin has to get done.
Of course don't forget Gurley comin up soon. Or Goff. Or Peters thereafter, not to mention Talib. The lineup of tough decisions that lie ahead is significant, and the fact is that Kevin needs to get some of these elite players signed. I don't think he's going to whiff on them all, but if he whiffs on even enough of them it is indeed going to affect this team's competitive window. Condemning Kevin right now is premature, but it is true that he's got to produce or the owner will need to move him out of the football business and find himself another voice who is more capable of managing an elite franchise.
