It doesn't have to strictly be about gimmick plays. Rams WR's were schemed open at times. That seems the case because of how wide open many of Goff's throws were. So I'm not talking about the double reverses or whatever. Other WR's got the ball in space, so I think McVay could do it. And not that he didn't try to get Austin into space but I would say the results speak for themselves. Perhaps he didn't trust Austin. But also, there wasn't anything we hadn't already seen... I bet there was less... but if there was or wasn't, little of it worked.

If he doesn't get traded, it will be interesting to see if he is effective in his role, whatever it is.

I agree. You can make packages for the guy. If you can scheme a mediocre back to catch some passes, you can scheme TA to catch some passes. And he adds a bit more ordinary and basic WR stuff than a mediocre back. The difference is, he can break one, AND the defense knows it, so while he's in there, they account for him. But that has been true all along and he still caught his share. Schott had him at 70% receptions in 2014. In his career 194 receptions, he has 25 over 11 yards, which would be bad for a receiver but fine for a Tavon---especially now, with other receivers to account for. So yeah you can design things where he threatens to break it in the passing game. The trickery and gimmicks are fine IMO as long as they are part of a package that includes his typical kinds of catches along with his typical kinds of runs.

But then maybe McV doesn't want to scheme that stuff in for him, in which case he's at best a back-up RB.
