He said Tavon is going to have to be a receiver. So unless he becomes a true WR, I don't see him playing much. McVay has his system and players have to fit in it.
I hope they trade him because I would like to see him succeed somewhere. He is a good football player but I'm not sure he has a place in the NFL. We've really only seen him used properly once and the results were pretty good. Plenty of college standouts that couldn't find a place in the NFL and plenty of GM's that have drafted those types.
But IMO if Austin is going to succeed, it won't be in a system that he doesn't fit in.... maybe not at all. But if he stays we'll see if he can do something. Maybe Cooks can be the mentor he needs.
I also think its clear that McVay knows how to work his system... top offense is some proof of that. But I'm not sure if there is much evidence of him adjusting the system to fit the players... Again, can't argue with the results and that is why I would just as well see Austin get traded. Not saying that he has no value in the offense but Boras was probably used him more creatively than McVay... and that was probably out of need (for several reasons).
To be clear, I am paraphrasing when I say McVay said TA was going to have to be a WR... I think he said he needs to do more than just run the ball and embellished on that... But this was weeks ago and my memory is shot. But what I got from that press conference was that he wanted Austin to develop as a WR.
