I think he can be an effective hybrid WR/RB. .
I know folks like to talk about him not being a "pure' WR and what-not. Look, there is a playbook and each of the players has a designation, X, Y, Z, etc...so, when Austin is a one of those he's a wide receiver, that's the grouping (a "Y" is the TE but if Austin replaces him, he's the Y, or others playbooks call it differently)
Anyway, whatever the nomenclature is, he runs the routes of the position and he's a receiver.
IF he takes Gurley's spot, then he's the 3, the "R" or RB and he runs the RB
There is no "hybrid" position where he runs "hybrid" plays. This "use him creatively" is just a way of saying they dig deep into playbook to find gimmicks, which are okay once or twice a game, but defenses catch up.
He is a wide receiver who plays a second position, he plays both positions. It's no different than a basketball player who can plays shooting guard and small forward...he can only play one at a time.
So when he's at X, Y, Z he's a WR and runs WR plays even if that entails a ghost action, or fake end around or whatevere
When he's at 3, he's a RB and runs the ball or runs RB routes.
The truth is he's a failure at WR, his PRIMARY position. As a RB, he's not someone who can play that full time, he's been good as a gimmick, a change-up, but for the money he made it does not make up for his failure as a WR.
