DJ = Desean Jackson ... there are others
See I don't see DJ as a 1 trick pony. D Jackson runs enough different routes effectively so that he is a threat over almost the whole field. The whole point of the idea of a 1-trick pony is that because he can only run deep, and does not have enough else he does well enough to threaten the defense that way, he becomes predictable enough to be shut down. That's not true of Jackson. I would say that Jackson had some limitations compared to a bigger or more physical receiver, but unlike Donnie Avery or Chris Givens, he actually wasn't a one-trick pony.
Jackson is a good comparison for Cooks though. Of course, it remains to be seen if Cooks can do it as consistently for as long as Jackson has. Speaking of both, because of size, you can't use them in any ways that expose them physically, but that still leaves a lot of options, and because they can do more things effectively, they are not as predictable. I would say neither would have had careers if either one actually were a 1-trick pony. A 1-trick pony, by definition, can only run deep routes and because they're not as effective running routes outside of that, it's too easy to tell what they are going to do and therefore too easy to take them away defensively.
