So explain to me if the Rams are say at 22.5 a year (78 million guaranteed )

and the AD wants say 24 million (and 84 million guaranteed ) would that be the Rams lowballing him or he wanting to much?

Just don't buy the pay him whatever he wants mantra. Of course AD wants as much as he can get but where does it go from

there if the Rams feel like the cost is too steep? And there will be a bunch of dudes coming up over the next three years or so.

What price do you think the team should pay?

Red: That's neither. That's just negotiation.

Blue: The only "pay him whatever he wants" mantra is among those who claim to oppose it. There's no actual person saying "pay him whatever he wants"--that's an invented strawman. It's understood that the parameters are more dynamic than that. It's also understood that the market has a say in this and the market sets AD's value as somewhere in the 22-25 M range. The real issue will be structure and guaranteed money etc.

More: No team sets in advance the limits on who gets what percentage of the 60%. They just adjust the cap a year at a time as necessary and if they're smart, keep their best players. It's just not that dire. Teams approach it with flexibility. And for good reason. Look at last year's Rams. 2 of their highest contracts, Tavon and Quinn, were not that productive, and they won anyway. Why? Coaching, scheme, good key core players, and a constant influx of good draft picks, UDFAs, and low-market budget FAs. Imagine what they will be like when they have a terrific 60% core of players like both Donald and Goff. And they will STILL be bringing in good draft picks, UDFAs, and low-market budget FAs.

The cap is never going to be an issue with this Rams leadership.

And a 1.5 M difference is just never going to break them. It's not like that.

My own take on all this is, you never get so paranoid about the cap that it causes you to either jettison or dither around with one of the very best players in the league.

Being highest paid on defense might not be enough for Aaron Donald
