Basically, the strategy you espouse is draft a guy, don't pay him and just use 5th year options and franchise tags.
Well, there are ramifications to that strategy. If you build a championship team, somebody is going to get paid.
Who are you willing to lose in the next two years?
Gurley?
Peters?
Joyner?
Somebody gets paid at the top of the market or you lose them. Kupp will be there in 2020...do you not pay him?
This formula means you better be hitting on all cylinders for the draft every year.
Personally, I want guys who are career players for my team. Those are the guys whose names hang on the rafters. But, that isn't business...that's just personal feelings.
Business-wise letting Donald hang is as I see it bad business. The cap and the contracts are set up in a way for this to work out beautifully if the Rams sign Donald this year. It's easier to sign a star a year...Gurley can be extended next year...or Joyner ...or Peters. In two years, we have a huge decision to make. Do you really want to choose between Donald, Gurley, Peters, etc. all in one year?
The pick up a fifth year option and tag him two years means you will likely lose a couple players. I'm here to say we will not draft ourselves out of that.
By the way, without Gurley, this offense crashes and burns.
BTW...I noticed you didn't comment on the Von Miller salary...which now, two years later, looks quite reasonable for his talent.
