When you get to 3rd contracts, the "rules" change because of the player's age or injury history etc.. It becomes much more case by case.

There is no rule in the NFL market saying that players at other positions up for their 2nd contract cannot be paid more than qbs in the same situation (2nd contract) were paid 3 years ago.

If there were, then Suh already exceeded it in 2015 when he signed for 19 M. At that point he was already surpassing what qbs had been signing for (2nd contract) in 2013 and 2014. (For example in 2013 Matt Stafford signed for 15 M).

Contracts go up. You can't tell a player at a non-qb position you';re not going to be paying him more than what qbs were paid (again, 2nd contract) 2-3 years ago. Or if anyone did think that, it has already been violated multiple times.
