Well, there are different ways to judge a FO competence level, max.
Hit rate on picks and FA acquisitions.
Retaining top players.
Allowing non-fits to leave.
Not grossly overpaying on numerous contracts.
Maintaining cap integrity sufficient to retain most needed players.
Ensuring flexibility that permits seizing opportunities that appear.
Getting good value in trades for both incoming and outgoing players.
Recognizing when it becomes obvious that a previous move was a bad one and quickly correcting it rather than trying to save face indefinitely.
We both know that no organization does all of the above perfectly. But I think that the Rams now more than hold their own.
Are the Rams better than most FOs? I think so.
But they are not as good as the best ones. That's my main point.
When they stop making dumb moves that they constantly have to fix, then they will be there.
What we should be talking about is not defending them because they are better than most and do good stuff too, but looking at what needs to happen for them to take the step up.
My hope is that as McVay grows in experience he wont let the stupid stuff continue to happen.
To me thats more productive than saying, hey its not an easy job and the Rams on the whole are doing really well. Thats not my bag to cover up what needs to be done to get better.
