Forget the moves post season. I'll give credit to the Rams for trying to change...but it was a self inflicted wound. And while we now have a dynamic duo at the corners, it doesn't come without risk based on the behavior by both individuals they acquired.
But...the initial move to sign Ogletree was ridiculous. We have people who "supposedly" know a third of what the Rams brass know and they all stated Ogletree was not a fit in the Rams 3-4 style. These same people stated he was never a real fit as a ILB. It was obvious to the people on the outside. What in the heck were they thinking on the inside? I would really like to know. I would really hope there was a logical reason to sign him to that deal.
Philips had plenty of time to evaluate Ogletree. So, they sign him in the middle of the season? To what end? They didn't have to sign him. They didn't have to pay, in essence $6 million to get a 4th and 6th pick. Their excuse that it gave them flexibility is perplexing. It was a mistake...an expensive one at that.
I agree with Max. As of now, and the recent past, the Rams have done a poor job of handling contracts. They need to get their act together and do so quickly.
I'm assuming much of this activity is to make room for the long term deal for Donald, and possibly keep Watkins.
If they can't get these guys signed, we are in trouble. We need to know the playing field so that we can strategize for future contracts. Right now, that field has land mines all over it.
Let's hope Donald...and Watkins...are signed, sealed and delivered by the draft.
We have a long history of dysfunction in the FO. Vermeil was able to overcome it, but I fear McVay isn't quite there yet.
This Ogletree move looks to me to be Demoff and Pastoors doing contracts without clearly understanding what they are doing. They aren't football guys and I'm worried that they get all excited about getting what they think is a good financial deal for a player as their primary focus, cause lets face it, thats all they know.
I'm just guessing here, it could be Snead behind all this. I just don't know. But I do know that if Phillips and McVay were behind the signing then I would be very depressed. Those 2 guys should know better.
I think what I also fear is that Snead is an undisciplined wild man. I fear that he is all over the place and simply thrives on making moves.
Lots of thoughts here, but the bottom line is that it was a dumb move that may be symptomatic of a larger problem in how this FO is run.
