He might still ultimately like the Rams over all other offers.
After he tests the market he and his agent might get a reality check. He might like the Rams, after all.
The Rams are a good fit for him unless he insists upon being the 100 catch 1500 yard WR. Being a part of a winning organization and playing for amazing coaches and with excellent teammates has it’s own rewards.
But if not, the Rams will move on and have a helluva season.
Just one year later, the Rams are without Watkins, Gaines, and a 2nd round pick this year. That constitutes a major faux pas by the Rams brain trust.
They took a shot, max.
You pays your money and you takes your chances...
If they extend Watkins for a halfway reasonable price, then this is still a good trade. If not, oh well.
The problem is that Watkins underwhelmed. They expected elite but they got mediocre. They can only squeeze so much “potential” into the justification for his eventual contract.
Had Watkins performed as expected, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. He would be a Ram with a big juicy 5 year extension.
So, it’s not a big stretch to say that Watkins kinda blew his contract year opportunity. Now he’s gotta rely on some team overpaying him our of need or desperation. Didn’t have to be that way.
