The way drops are counted is highly subjective, la. I don’t think that that’s debatable.
So, one can say that Watkins had zero drops because that’s what the statisticians said, OR one can see two missed opportunities for TD’s by an alleged #1 WR at crunch time with one’s own eyes.
I guess one’s take on the same plays comes down to one’s agenda. Probably par for the course for 2 passionate Ram fans.
IMO, a truly top drawer WR makes those 2 plays.
There are statistical protocals for drops and yes, they are subjective to a degree. But there is a different level of "drops". In 2010 Rams had a ton of drops, 36, I think, but in talking to Rams coaches, they had their own stat, it was called "catchable balls". Ball, in the offensive coaches mind should have been coach, and that number was 50 or so. So, one more per game of "catchable balls". Again, that is subjective but it comes with the coaches knowledge to make the call
In both cases with Watkins, they were, in my view catchable. A drop has to be in the hands and then drop, with Watkins ball was slightly underthown but also it was accurate enough that he should have made the catch---this is the long one I am talking about,
The one in the end zone was messed up in several ways, due to the hold, the line of sight issues but still, likely a catchable ball.
