and honestly, trading Gurley would be utterly incompetent...I have stronger words.
You say name the last team with a great RB that won the Super Bowl. Well...we all know there is more than one way to win. And, having a HOF bound experienced QB at the helm means a lot. And, I think I'm safe to say we do not have a HOF bound experienced QB on this team. Could Goff be? He has not shown me he is...but he is showing that he can be really good...he's just not all the way there. He hasn't won any big games...or come up clutch at the end of games. Heck, he struggles with the 2 minute offense. That said...let's analyze...
Let's look at the last 10 SB winners...
Year Team Rushing Rank Observation2008 New York Giants They were 4th in the league and had a outstanding pass rush. Eli Manning came up big.
2009 Pittsburgh Steelers They were 23rd in the league and had Ben Roethlisburger who was established and proven big game performer.
2010 New Orleans Saints They were 6th in the league and had Drew Brees...I'll stop there.
2011 Green Bay Packers They were 24th in the league and had Aaron Rodgers...I'll stop there.
2012 New York Giants They were 6th in the league. Once again Eli was clutch, especially down the stretch.
2013 Baltimore Ravens They were 11th in the leagues and had a HOF defense.
2014 Seattle Seahawks They were 4th in the league with Marshawn Lynch and had a stellar defense
2015 New England Patriots They were 18th in the league and had Tom Brady and Bill Belichick...I'll stop there.
2016 Denver Broncos They were 17th in the league and had one of the great defenses and defensive players.
2017 New England Patriots They were 7th in the league and had Tom Brady and Bill Belichick...I'll stop there.
So...here is what I see...'
1. It pays to have a HOF bound QB with experience
2. It pays to have arguably the best coach in NFL history
3. It pays to have one of the best defenses in the NFL
4. It pays to have a top 10 running game
As I see it...we don't have 1. We don't have 2. We don't have 3. We have 4.
1. Jared Goff is not 1. If you have arguably one the top 10 passing QB's in NFL history on your team, then a stable of backs may be good. Goff isn't near that class...whatsoever. In fact, his success at QB this year can be significantly attributed to the guy you propose trading...Gurley. Goff's numbers wouldn't look so great without all those Gurley screen passes. And I doubt a stable of backs could do what Gurley did on the screens.
2. While I'm a Sean McVay fan, he is still being out-coached from time to time. He's young and will get better...but he's not Belichick material. Billy boy doesn't get out-coached.
3. The Rams are just a couple players from having an outstanding defense. They already have the best defensive player in the NFL in Donald.
4. Gurley, the guy you propose trading, is why we have a top 10 running game. He's the reason Goff made it to the Pro Bowl. Bolster the right side of our line and it will stay that way.
Statements like when was the last time ignore the fact the there are other ways to win IF your strengths overcome weaknesses. Our QB is not good enough at this time to do that.
Trading Gurley or not re-signing Donald would fit in the category of the most bone headed NFL moves in the 21st century.
And I just went back and saw other responses that were much more efficient than mine. I spent too much time on this.
