I don't understand if Sammy just isn't a good scheme fit for McVay's offense.
Or if it has to do with McVay not trusting Goff enough, yet, to make more of the deeper throws that Sammy's routes run.
Or if it has to do with poor route running for Sammy.
Or if Goff is just more comfortable throwing to Woods and Kupp for whatever reason, maybe because they tend to run more intermediate routes.
But I must admit, something is amiss.
And if it means losing that 2nd round pick by Sammy leaving because he wants upper echalon money, then I doubt Demoff will approve re-signing him for no other reason than to protect the 2nd round investment.
I think, somewhat like for Tavon Austin, it comes down to matching money with purpose and production. Giving Tavon a $12 mil per year contract was just flat dumb. And perhaps the Rams will have to evaluate how Sammy fits against what they might have to pay to keep him.
My guess is that the Rams will offer Sammy something similar to Woods' deal. My other guess is that Sammy is not going to be in as big a demand for an elite level contract as he might have hoped for. The problem is that some players get a number stuck in their heads (like Barkdale did) and they wind up leaving the team that would have paid them the most for a team that pays them less because they held out waiting for the big deal and wound up taking what they could get.
If Tavon is paid too much to be primarily a decoy, then the same has to be said for Watkins.
