...As for Everett, the results are on my side. Facts...not hope. Everett was a failure in year one. The only way it would be worse is if he caught I guess zero passes. Now...if you want to debate that with facts, research and knowledge, fire away...
I have listed numerous TEs who have come in and contributed year 1 in another post ---receptions and targets. I'm not solely relying on those results but it does provide significant perspective. You say notoriously slow. Well, notoriously slow and non-existent results are two different things. Maybe you argue 16 receptions is not non-existent...ok. Then we disagree. And, one can say notoriously slow describes lots of positions...QB, WR, TE, DT, CB, etc. And I can point to many who have hit the ground running. TEs are not exempt from contributing in year 1. There are many many many many examples that are contrary to your comment. They don't even have to be first rounders.
I'm posting some facts LMU93 provided for us the other day regarding rookie TE production.
Here's LMU93:
"I went back a ways and looked at rookie TEs. Since 2005 (13 seasons), 245 rookie TEs have caught at least one pass their rookie seasons. But only 83 of those caught 10+ passes. Only 42 caught 20+. And only 27 caught 30+. That's two per year."
LMU93 stats on TEsSo basically...
only 33% of rookie TEs have more than 10 Rec.
only 17% have more than 20 Rec.
only 11% have more than 30 Rec.
You say - based on your very small sample size of research - that it's a fact that Everett was a failure in year 1, yet he had more receptions than two thirds of rookie TEs dating back 13 years.
He was closer to that 20 Rec. mark which puts him near the 83rd percentile. Based on the numbers he's somewhere between the 67-83rd percentile.
I'm sorry bro, but that's objectively not a failure.
Your numbers only show that some TEs hit the ground running with great production. But based on LMU's research, that puts them in elite territory for rookie TEs. It's not the norm. The most we can say with your research is, it's a fact that Everett didn't have elite production in his rookie season.
We can't factually say he failed. The results are not on your side. Fact!
In 2017, 13 TEs caught 50 or more passes. They are Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Eric Ebron, Jared Cook, Jimmy Graham, Kyle Rudolph. Ben Watson. Jason Witten, Evan Engram. Rob Gronkowski, Zach Ertz, Delanie Walker, Jack Doyle, and Travis Kelce.
How many of those caught significantly more than 20-something passes as rookies?
Jimmy Graham, Witten (though it was just 35), Engram, Gronkowski, and Ertz. So 5 of 13.
