History of rules regarding what's a catch /possession envolving end zone or ground contact is interesting and could obviously be changed again.
If you are of certain age or have watched some old highlights you'd remember the old Diving SuperBowl TD by Butch Johnson of the Cowboys which wouldn't be a TD now as he lost control as he landed with the ball popping out as he hit the ground. .
You had the Bert Emanuel rule (which has I think must have been changed twice ) regarding nose of the football contacting the ground simultaneously and that effectively nullifying a catch at one point by rule.
Now the main factors for ruling a catch are a secured catch and at least no ball movement going to or at the point of contacting ground (let's remove fumble
from equation for simplicity ok ) .
They can change the conversation/ rule again and I hope it becomes something we don't have to look at and agonize over to infinity.
I also hope it doesn't come up in a crucial Super Bowl play especially if we are there .
Keeping fingers crossed.
