If you just look at stats, you'd think that Alex Smith is a HOF QB. But the context is that he tends to throw quick, very short passes and it's the YAC that makes his stats look so good.
Wilson is NOT a great pocket passer for all the reasons I stated. He makes his money on off schedule plays. Yeah, he has decent enough numbers and stats, but that's only half the story (as it is with stats in general).
If you want Wilson as your pocket passer QB, fine. But if you take the scramble plays away from him then Wilson is no longer Wilson, just as Tarkenton would no longer have been Tarkenton. And as the Panthers have finally figured out, Cam isn't Cam if running is not a big part of his game. Nobody is saying that they wouldn't be above average NFL QBs as conventional pocket passers. But considered "great" players? I don't think so.
